Guatemala!

I know this website looks pretty dull now. . . but come back in a few months!
Traci and I are heading to Guatemala in mid August for a year of service through Virginia Mennonite Missions. We'll try to keep this website updated with journal entries and lots of pictures! We're also both on Facebook if you want to check us out there.

I’ve been in the loop on the Guatemala water filter project. I have been doing Rotarian water projects in Nicaragua and Kenya these last 7 – 8 years. I abandoned Nicaragua because I don’t speak Spanish. It was just too difficult as you can imagine. While in Nicaragua I met Ron Rivera of Potters for Peace. http://www.pottersforpeace.org/ . This organization teaches locals how to manufacture their own water treatment devices. More can be learned by visiting their site. Ron Rivera called these devices “weapons of biological mass destruction”.

You may want to consider this effective device when the filters recently installed need replacing. I seriously doubt if the villagers will be able to come up with replacement funds.

Generic Guatemala inquiry

Several years ago a lady from Fairbanks, Alaska was beaten by a mob into a vegetative state because it was rumored that the Gringos were there to steal their children. I have also seen other accounts of this from time to time. It appears to be just a Guatemala phenomenon. Have you come across this in your travels?
